Courts of Law
In the event of a legal dispute, a Court of Law is established. The vast majority of cases are civil disputes of a professional nature requiring the legal assistance of the Pillar of Law. In the unlikely event of an actual crime--usually a minor offense such as tardiness, accidental breach of strata etiquette, or minor thoughtcrime--a jury of seven, one from each pillar, decides the guilt or innocence of the accused.
Advocates represent plaintiffs, accusers, and defendants in a Court of Law. Generally, an advocate must be of one rank higher than his client; a citizen of rank 1 has never been in this position, but if he were, he would be his own advocate.
Researchers assist an advocate by providing relevant laws and prior rulings regarding those laws.
An arbiter, at least two ranks higher than the defendant or plaintiff, directs the proceedings. The Ordinator is called upon to arbitrate all trials involving rank 1 or 2 citizens.
Educators explain pertinent laws to the jury, sometimes with the aid of interpreters.
Executors carry out sentences. Most punishments for crimes involve compulsory changes to a citizen's life, for which the executor notifies the relevant members of society who will take part. Executors also keep in contact with Ordinals when necessary.
